INTRODUCTION
Kia Orana and Welcome to the Cook Islands GIS Users Group (CKGUG) Home. After many months of "to and fro", we've finally put our foot down and decided to establish this group and get things moving.
GIS, of course, stands for Geographical Information System
(cache), a tool used for the integration, storage, editing, analysis, sharing, and the displaying of spatial
(cache) information.
In here, we will also try and explain who we are and what we are supposed to be doing. We will also tell you a little bit about the history of this group.
We would also like to thank the Ministry of Infrastructure and Planning
(cache) (MOIP) and Telecom Cook Islands Ltd
(cache)for allowing us the space to host this portal.
INAUGURAL MEETING, 8th May 2009
Back;(L to R): Andrew Iroa (Te Aponga), Aporo Kirikava (Police), Reboama Samuel, Chairman (TCI)
Front;(L to R): Timoti Tangiruaine, GIS Advisor (MOIP), Louisa Karika, Secretary (NES), William Tuivaga (EMCI)
GOALS
The goals of the CKGUG are defined as:
- Build GIS skills and capacity through participation on projects that requires GIS capacity.
- "Back stop" or "Buy-in" to GIS projects by building the membership orgarnisations own data layers.
- Develop and promote the use of a National "Spatial Data Infrastructure"
(cache) as a means of interactively having access to up-to-date information.
- Coordinate the access of GIS training opportunities from regional organisations.
MEETINGS
- See the minutes for the inaugural meeting on the 8th May 2009. This was held at the Emergency Management Cook Islands (EMCI) office.
THINGS TO DO
| THINGS | DESCRIPTION | TIMEFRAME | STATUS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finalize Data Sharing Protocol | Check wording of document and send comments back to Timoti by 13th May June | by June 2009 | In progress. Some of the points in the Data Protocol can/maybe addressed by the Official Information Act 2007 |
| GIS software and hardware stocktake | Undertake a GIS software and hardware stocktake on the main stakeholders of spatial information. | October 2009 | |
UP-COMING PROJECTS
The CKGUG's contribution towards these projects are;
- To provide the GIS technical capacity through "doing the work and learning at the same time".
In return;
- The CKGUG acquire's the necessary GIS skills for the orgarnisations it's members represent, and through an MOU, have access to the spatial data produced to compliment the delivery of it's services.
| PROJECT | DESCRIPTION | TIMEFRAME | STATUS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Household Mapping | GIS mapping of all households using information from the Cook Islands Census 2006. The main objectives of this project is two fold; Capacity Building in GIS skills and knowledge and secondly, contribute to social and economic development through the provision of spatial data. Preliminary work on this project is shown below. | Proposal developed by November 2009 | In progress. It is intended that this project "piggy backs" on current and/or future projects as a means of equitable mainstreaming of financial and human resources i.e, Sustainable Land Management Project A Risk Assessment Project (funded by the EU) is also being designed for the district of Ngatangiia, in particular, the water catchment of Avana and extending to the coast. |
| DTM Development - Rarotonga | This project involves the use of MapINFO 8.5 and Vertical Mapper to generate a Digital Elevation Model (DTM) using the 2m interval contours of the coastal plain (0m-30m elevation) of Rarotonga. This data can then be used for Flood Modelling and Surface Water runoff, just to mention a few uses. |
November 2009 | In progress. |
